The US Department of Energy (DOE) has approved amendments to the energy conservation standards which currently apply to External Power Supplies, and established new energy conservation standards for External Power Supplies that are currently not subject to such regulation.

These standards, which are based on a series of mathematical equations that vary based on output power, will affect a wide variety of External Power Supplies used in many different consumer products. They prescribe a minimum average efficiency during 'active mode' (i.e. when an External Power Supply is plugged in to the main electricity supply, and is supplying power in response to a demand from another connected device) and a maximum power consumption level during 'no-load mode' (i.e. when an External Power Supply is plugged in to the main electricity supply but is not supplying any power).

Having found that the new and amended standards are both technologically feasible and economically justified, the effective date of this new Federal Rule is April 11, 2014.  Note that the compliance deadline in relation to these new and amended standards for External Power Supplies is February 10, 2016.
