Argentina Proposes Bill on Disposal of Lighting Products

Argentina is proposing a draft law on lighting products containing toxic elements. The aim of the law is to prevent compact fluorescent lamps, fluorescent tubes and other similar types of lighting sources containing toxic elements, whether liquid, solid or gaseous, from being discarded as urban solid waste.

In addition, it aims to raise awareness about the dangers of toxic elements contained in such lighting products, promote community participation in the protection of the environment and create collection points in all commercial establishments where lighting products containing toxic elements are marketed.

Producers, importers, distributors and/or their representatives are required to mark the packaging with the EU logo indicating not household waste. Additionally, on the back of the package must be printed a clear breakdown of the steps to be taken in case of breakage. The bill proposes fines and sanctions for infractions.
