Chile Announces Timetable for Implementation of Recycling Law

Chile has announced details on how it is planning to implement its Framework for Waste Management, Extended Producer Responsibility and Promotion of Recycling in 2017. This announcement was made during a seminar arranged by ASIPLA (the Chilean Association of Industrial Plastics). 

Mr. Paul Badenier, Minister for the Environment, reiterated the Chilean Government's commitment to gradually apply these new regulations, and on an incremental basis taking into account technological and geographical circumstances, along with the volume of waste and its economic and social impact. 

The Minister outlined the four key areas to be dealt with in the regulations: 

• Procedure:  These requirements will set goals for priority products
• Recycling Fund: This will finance initiatives to support the law
• Transboundary Movement of Waste, and 
• The introduction of a simplified procedure for the sanitary authorization of waste reception and storage facilities

Badenier also added that while the goal is to finalize development of the regulations by May 2017, some of these may not be complete until the second half of the year.
