[**Video:** *Consumer Reports* on magnetic balls](http://bcove.me/pbel1vs5) NASPGHAN surveyed 354 pediatric gastroenterologists, who had treated 480 cases in which children or teens swallowed magnetic balls, with 204 incidents occurring in 2012. Eighty percent of these cases required either endoscopy or surgery, including several that required removing portions of the bowel. In the summer of 2012, the United States (US) Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled the magnetic ball toys, typically sold in sets of 100 or more BB-sized balls, as adult office toys, under names like Buckyballs and Zen Magnets. Two magnetic toy manufacturers have contested this recall. In September 2012, CPSC proposed a rule to ban the sale of these magnetic ball toys, noting some 1,700 ingestions of magnets from magnet sets having been treated in emergency rooms between 2009-2011.
