We trust and love the guys who catch and sell their fish, bringing it straight to the market off their own boat. The fish is always wonderful and absolutely fresh. Expecting visitors we went instead to the local fish shop where I photographed the kind of dodgy label that treats us badly, telling only part of the story. The label was silent as to whether the smoked salmon was wild or farmed. A small, possibly deliberate omission, and no big deal, right? It’s a long recognized subtlety that ‘smoked Irish salmon’ means the fish is actually Irish (though not necessarily wild), whereas fish sold as ‘Irish smoked salmon’ can come from any country and just be smoked in Ireland. And of course ‘smoked’ can mean it tastes smoky by soaking in liquid, not necessarily that it’s fished from a real smokehouse. In the same town a famous Irish Whiskey is distilled, but the bottles are silent as to whether the malted barley is exclusively Irish or not. Who cares, right? Against this we sit up when newcomers take transparency to a whole new level. Each packet of Keogh’s hand cooked, artisan potato crisps allows us to pinpoint on Google Maps the exact field where each potato crop was grown. It helps create a very positive connection, and it’s fun. UK’s [‘Which’ magazine](http://www.which.co.uk/) has just published an article titled ‘Too good to be true: Dodgy claims debunked’ highlighting what it called dodgy claims made in relation to TV’s, Printers, Washing machines, Fridge Freezers, Tablet storage and Vacuum suction. In some cases it seems the hard work of designers and engineers are being stretched unwisely by marketing and advertising decisions, risking the reputation of brands. It’s a fine line because no laws are being broken and yet the article points out that meeting certain industry standards even permit these kind of so-called, dodgy claims. The letter of consumer protection is adhered to, but not the spirit. In relation to certain of these dodgy claims 'Which’ has contacted [BEUC](http://www.beuc.eu/)(the umbrella European consumer organization) asking for the EU Commission to review. Strategic **Compliance Knowledge Management** aims to protect brands from this kind of carelessness. The attributes and activities around products that drive sales can be agreed per market as decisions relating to legal and ethical requirements are implemented, well before the products hit the shelves.
