The draft Directive would introduce specific limit values for tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate (TCEP), tris(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) phosphate (TCPP), and tris\[2-chloro-1-(chloromethyl)ethyl\] phosphate (TDCP) in toys, in order to ensure alignment with the latest scientific evidence and increase children's safety. TCEP is a phosphate ester used as a flame-retardant plasticiser in polymers. The main industrial branches in which TCEP has been used are the building, furniture, and textile industries. The draft Directive would amend Appendix C of Annex II of the Safety of Toys Directive, to establish content limit values of 5 mg/kg (ppm) for each of TCEP, TCPP, and TDCP in toys. The draft Directive is open for comments for 60 days. If enacted, the draft Directive will take force 18 months after adoption.
