ENERGY STAR for Displays Version 7.0 Launched By EPA

A revision of the ENERGY STAR^® Displays specification has been launched by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  The EPA is planning to release a Draft 1 Version 7.0 Specification in April and following from that, host a webinar to engage stakeholders in an open discussion of the draft.

The aim is to develop a Version 7.0 specification which maintains ENERGY STAR as a market differentiator for displays, expands the scope of product sizes, and accounts for advances in technology.

Research has shown that market share for computer monitors meeting Version 6.0 requirements increased substantially since that specification took effect in June 2013.

The European Commission will also be involved in the consultation for this specification and EPA welcomes stakeholder suggestions on any other issues to be considered during the revision process.

EPA has said it plans to focus the specification development on the following revisions:

• Develop more stringent energy efficiency requirements across all products, based on recent market data and observations of the  performance of existing ENERGY STAR certified products;
• Expand the scope of products to include professional signage displays greater than 60 inches in diagonal screen size;
• Assess networking developments and power usage;
• Review human interfaces, namely touch, and potentially other features such as gesture, depending on available data; and
• Develop a test method for testing DC-powered display products and more accurately account for DC-powered products in the specification.
