The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the first-ever [ENERGY STAR® Version 1.0 Specification for Clothes Dryers](http://www.energystar.gov/products/specs/node/117), which will take effect on January 1, 2015.

It’s believed that utility cost saving could grow by a massive $1.5 billion each year if all residential clothes dryers sold in the US met these new requirements, and over 22 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions would be prevented.

The new specifications will recognize a selection of highly efficient electric, gas, and compact dryers that will use approximately 20% less energy than what is required by the minimum efficiency standards effective in 2015.

ENERGY STAR is a voluntary product labeling program designed to identify and promote energy efficient products in the marketplace. The US EPA and Department of Energy (DOE) are jointly responsible for managing the ENERGY STAR program. EPA has taken the lead in issuing specifications and guidance materials, while DOE has developed the test methods used to measure product efficiency.
