The European Chemicals Agency, ECHA, is proposing a restriction on the manufacturing, use and placing on the market of bis(pentabromophenyl) ether (decaBDE). DecaBDE is mainly used as a flame retardant in plastics and textiles and has been identified as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) because of its persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic properties.

The proposal also covers articles containing decaBDE in concentrations greater than 0.1% by weight and articles manufactured from recycled materials are similarly covered.

Public comments are invited until March 17, 2015, but early comments are requested by November 17, 2014, to assist discussions within ECHA’s Scientific Committees on the restriction proposal.
