Supreme Eurasian Economic Council signed the Treaty of Accession of the Republic of Armenia to the EAEU and two months later, the Council on the one hand, and the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, on the other hand, also signed the Treaty of Accession of the Kyrgyz Republic to the EAEU. It seems that whatever the EAEU has to offer is appealing to other countries in the region, be it Moscow-led ideals of economic development founded on the concept of togetherness, plans to counterbalance the European Union, a joint aspiration to achieve the "four freedoms" implementation, or simply the harmonious trade cooperation of like-minded countries. Armenia officially joined the Eurasian Economic Union on January 2, 2015 the day after the Treaty of the Eurasian Economic Union came into force. Armenia’s change of heart came after the meeting in Moscow when Armenia suddenly stirred away from free-trade negotiations with the EU and switched to become a member of the EAEU instead. As part of the deal, three Armenian members will share one vote in the union's governing body, the Eurasian Economic Commission. Armenia will need to gradually transition to a unified tariff system with 2022 set as the deadline. It will further need to align its national legislation with that of the EAEU. Kyrgyz accession did not come as a surprise although the process took longer than expected. In spite of all the initial efforts and support, the functional details could not be worked out so easily and the original accession deadline of May 1st was missed. Nevertheless, the successful integration convergence that commenced in 2014 with the implementation of the “road map” on the accession of Kyrgyzstan to the Union brought positive results. The road map contributed to the country's economy to adapt the legal system and practices of the EAEU. On August 12, Kyrgyzstan finally became a full member of the Union. At the signing ceremony, the Kyrgyz President Atambayev noted that in order to harmonize the legal framework of Kyrgyzstan with the legislation and standards of the EAEU, the Parliament has adopted a new legislative package. He is also convinced that the EAEU will bring a common good for the member nations, strengthen stability in the Eurasian space and encourage further movement to the Eurasian region. Despite the expansion proactivity, the strength and preparedness of the Eurasian Economic Union is being seriously tested by the global crisis, as well as anti-Russian sanctions imposed in the aftermath of Moscow's annexation of Crimea and resulting in the economic slump in Russia. Consequently, Kazakhstan and Belarus have raised their doubts about the sustainability of the new union. The Union, however, seems to have bounced back stronger than ever with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan showing their interest. Discussions proposing the establishment of trade and economic relations, and partnership and cooperation have also started with a number of states, for example Vietnam, China, and potentially Turkey, Iran, India, Mongolia and Azerbaijan.
