The scavenging of valuable components (for example, compressors from fridges, hard disks and other IT equipment etc.) has a detrimental effect on compliant actors in the WEEE industry and the environment. There is a significant loss of valuable materials to the compliant WEEE industry which results in uneven competition. Compliant operators are at a disadvantage whereby the quality of the materials they are receiving is reduced.   The environmental impact of illegal trade in WEEE is also critical. The research has shown that 84,000 tonnes of fridge compressors are stolen before they are collected and sent for treatment. Removing compressors from fridges in a proper treatment facility is a complicated process to ensure that hazardous materials are not released. Removing compressors illegally immediately releases C02 and other dangerous substances into the atmosphere.
