In response to the recent report from the Chronic Hazard Advisory Panel (CHAP) on Phthalates, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce has issued letters to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), urging "swift action" on phthalates.

In its letter to CPSC Chairman Elliot Kaye, the Committee:

- urges the Chairman to preserve the existing bans on DNOP and DIDP;
- outlines its support for the CHAP's recommended ban on DIBP, DHEXP, DCHP and DPENP; and
- with regard to the CHAP's recommended interim ban on DIOP, "\[goes\] further and \[recommends\] a permanent ban since DIOP is currently used in products like baby bottles and pacifiers."

In its letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, MD, the Committee outlines the CHAP's findings related to phthalates in food, beverages, cosmetics, personal care products, drugs and pharmaceuticals, and asks the Commissioner to address several questions about the FDA's approach to phthalates and any plans for action in response to the CHAP report.

The letters to CPSC and FDA were signed by Henry Waxman (D-CA), Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL).
