In the report, released annually, KID found that the number of children's product recalls continued to decline in 2012, to 97, the lowest number since 2004. KID's executive director, Nancy Cowles, attributed the drop in recalls to the impact of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA). KID's report also highlighted the high numbers of incidents, injuries, and deaths associated with recalled products, each of which rose dramatically from 2011. For instance, one product, a swing set, had 1,232 reported incidents before consumers were alerted to the dangers through the recall. Additionally, KID found that, in 2012, eight children and one adult died prior to the recall of children's products. Deaths were associated with infant recliners, crib tents, travel beds, strollers, and an inflatable water slide, among other products, many of which are not subject to any safety standards. CPSC collected a total of $3 million in fines for companies who violated safety regulations, mostly for failing to report hazards from products such as drawstrings, baby boats, and magnetic toy sets. Of the 22 recalls of clothing items, all but one were for violating flammability standards, the small parts standard, lead paint standards, or the CPSC prohibition on drawstrings.
