US Initiative to Reduce Copper in Motor Vehicle Brake Pads

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), states and the automotive industry have come together to sign an agreement to reduce the use of copper and other materials in motor vehicle brake pads. The objective of this voluntary initiative is to decrease the amount of cooper in brake pads to less than 5% by weight in 2021 and to 0.5% by 2025.

Groups are also promising to reduce the amount of mercury, lead, cadmium, asbestiform fibers, and chromium-6 salts in brake pads.

The agreement seeks to reduce runoff of these materials from roads into US streams, rivers and lakes.
