I love that it shows how **Quality** and **Compliance** are essentially sides of the same coin. The context was narrow in that Crosby was discussing product compliance, but the definition works just as well for whole organizations. And as with companies, the high ‘quality' of an individual, her ‘good character’, is based on behavior resulting from a set of internal rules, guidelines and the social equivalent of best practices. 'Manners maketh man' as my granny was fond of reminding me. I’ve never heard an individual praised and had it explained that her great character is partly down to never breaking laws. Indeed we all know that what makes people attractive comes from choices that have nothing to do with following laws. (Mind you there’s no good thriller without a great baddie and certain people are hugely attracted by law breaking and law breakers, but that’s another story completely, and not for this blog.) What is for this blog, however, is that **now more than ever the character of companies is important**, under the spotlight, with rotten character increasingly obvious. While some companies constantly need to have things spelled out to them, accompanied by threat of sanction in order for them to do the right thing, more enlightened, better-run companies integrate compliance with strategy and deliberately get steps or even many good strides ahead of the law. I see the definition of ‘Compliance' as including absolutely every single requirement a company must meet and chooses to meet. And the reason this broad definition is important is that Information Technology has evolved to the point where decisions can be made with knowledge of all requirements in play, whether legal, or strategic. This makes for faster, better decision making at all levels. As this blog evolves I will explain either the meaning of life or the advantages of defining ‘Compliance' broadly rather than narrowly.
