“Under the new law, we now have the power to require safety reviews of all chemicals in the marketplace.” said Jim Jones, assistant administrator of the of Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. “We can ensure the public that we will deliver on the promise to better protect public health and the environment.”
The ten chemicals are as follows:
The list will generate a legal deadline for the completion of risk evaluations for these chemicals within three years, once it has been published in the Federal Register. Once complete, the evaluation will establish if the chemicals pose an unreasonable risk to both humans and the environment and, if so, the EPA must alleviate that risk within two years.
The EPA is required to release a scoping document within six months for each of the ten chemicals, under the newly amended law, which includes the exposure, hazard, conditions of use and the susceptible or potentially exposed sub-population which the EPA aims to consider for evaluation.
All additional chemicals will be selected for evaluation, with all remaining Work Plan chemicals to be reviewed for possible exposure and hazard. TSCA requires the EPA to carry out a constant flow of risk evaluations; they must have at least 20 chemical risk evaluations going on at a given time by 2019.
