The new directive aims to support the installation of these systems based on low-GWP and non-halogenated refrigerants and plans to cut the energy consumption of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems through the use of grants. The grant scheme was initially introduced by BMU in 2008 under the sponsorship of the National Climate Protection Initiative. Applicants are entitled to be awarded up to €150,000 for each installation, calculated on the basis of cooling capacity, installation type and refrigerant used. New installations have to use non-halogenated refrigerants, with small compression refrigeration units of 2-5 kW (which can use refrigerants whose GWP is below 750) being excluded . This Directive entered into force on 1 January 2017 and will remain valid until 1 January 2019.
