The import of any cellular or mobile telecommunication equipment into the country will require a "Letter of No Objection" and a corresponding Certificate of Approval. The measure is intended to discourage the importation of lost or stolen mobile equipment into the national territory. In addition, the measures are designed to ensure compliance with a law that requires that all equipment used to operate the radio frequency spectrum must have a corresponding approval certificate. Knowing the identity of each device imported into the country allows the agencies to determine the final destination of the equipment marketed. Other countries in the region, such as Colombia, Paraguay, Chile and Ecuador, have adopted similar measures to regulate the importation processes of mobile or cellular terminal devices. This provision applies to imports of these devices for commercial purposes only.
