Stricter Limits On the Way for Lead in Toys

An amendment to the EU Toys Directive was recently adopted  by the EU council in an attempt to strengthen the limits in place for lead usage in toys. The text adopted is identical to that proposed by the EU Commission in September of last year.

As a result of the new limits, the migration limits for lead, which are currently used under the EU Toys Directive, have been substantially lowered. These new limits for lead consist of:

• Lead 23 mg/kg (in scraped-off toy material)
• Lead 2.0 mg/kg (in dry, brittle, powder-like or pliable toy material)
• Lead 0.5 mg/kg (in liquid or sticky toy material)

The final text, which is set to enter into force on the 20th day after publication,  is yet to be published in the Official Journal of the European Union. Member states must transpose the requirements into their national law once the final text has been published, and the new limits will apply from that date.
