Brazil’s National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (INMETRO) has launched a public consultation on a proposed administrative rule prohibiting the marketing or sale of jewellery containing more than 0.01% of cadmium or 0.03 % of lead.
The proposed restriction applies to jewellery whether it is intended for use by adults or children. Manufacturers and/or importers will be required to maintain testing records from accredited laboratories showing the concentration of lead and cadmium in their products. These testing records must be made available to INMETRO on request.
If enacted, this rule will enter into force upon its official publication. Interested stakeholders can comment on this proposal until March 30, 2015.
