Canada's House of Commons defeated Bill C-486 relating to conflict minerals in the Great Lakes Region of Africa, including the Democratic Republic of Congo. The bill would have obliged companies to exercise due diligence in relation to their procurement of minerals in the region.
At its second reading vote, despite industry support, the bill was defeated by 146 to 127 votes. Only one member of the Conservative government voted in favour, and only one member of the other parties failed to support the bill. The proposer, Ottawa MP Paul Dewar, has committed to continue working with partners and stakeholders to stop the trade of conflict minerals in the region.
