According to Chinese press reports, China may be considering enacting a consumer product safety law.Speaking at a seminar as part of China's annual "Quality Month" event, a senior engineer from the General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said that China needs legislation to protect consumers and improve the quality of products.
The AQSIQ official said that nearly 15% of Chinese textile and clothing products are of substandard quality, which is reflected in the EU by the fact that almost 60% of all RAPEX (Rapid Exchange of Information System) notifications on unsafe products are of Chinese origin. The EU has been formally working with China for almost ten years in an attempt to improve product safety.
AQSIQ indicated that any future product safety legislation would be in addition to the Law on the Protection of Consumer Rights which was recently amended.
