The Danish Ministry of the Environment has announced that it is postponing its phthalate ban due to the fact that the phthalates in question are far more common than expected. The purpose of the ban is to protect Danes from everyday products containing four specific phthalates; from shower curtains to cables and wires.
Consumer protection is at the core of the ban, but the Environment Ministry is conscious of the effects it will have on business. A feasible and practical approach to phasing out products that contain the four phthalates is currently being developed in close cooperation with the industry.
The Ministry has reported that industry sectors are supporting the ban and will collaborate to produce a guideline to support companies in phasing out phthalates, in addition to finding appropriate alternatives. A ‘phthalate-free’ labeling system is also being considered.
