Two amendments to the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive were published recently by the EU Commission in order to approve new exemptions to Article 4; substance restrictions.
The decision came from consultants at the Öko Institut, who last year recommended that both exemptions are to be warranted and satisfy the test set out in Article 5 related to the availability, reliability and accuracy of alternatives.
The requests relate to the following:
- The exemption for lead in solders of electrical connections to temperature measurement sensors in particular devices
- The exemption for cadmium anodes in Hersch cells for certain oxygen sensors for use in industrial monitoring and control instruments
The exemption for lead in solders is due to expire on the June 30 2021, as determined by the Commission. The cadmium exemption mentioned above is to be valid for a period of seven years.
