The European Parliament Consumer Protection Committee has adopted two reports ensuring consumer products are safer to use, with MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) due to vote on the plans in December.
The new rules would clarify requirements by manufacturers, imports and distributors. The same safety rules would be established for everyone and it would be easier to trace the origin of faulty products.
The first report covers consumer product safety. Every product would have to include information on where it was produced, regardless of whether it was from a country in the EU or outside and would see the introduction of a new safety label.
The second report, concerning market surveillance, would clarify the rules, reduce their number and introduce sanctions if they were breached.
The committee also proposed creating a blacklist of producers of dangerous products.
