The French Ministry of Ecology has launched a public consultation on a string of draft orders aiming to streamline the country's transposition of its WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive.
Three of the drafts amend existing orders on:
1. WEEE registration and reporting to the National Register for electrical and electronic equipment,
2. Selective treatment for materials and components of waste electrical and electronic, and
3. Technical requirements for storage (including temporary storage) of WEEE prior to its treatment.
Regarding the two remaining proposed orders, one covers the responsibility of distributors to provide information to end-users on free WEEE takeback at the place of sale or during delivery, and requires retailers to take back small WEEE (less than 25cm) on a one-to-one basis if they have a sales areas over 400m2. The last order allows foreign producers to appoint authorized representatives to register and fulfil producer obligations on their behalf.
Comments on these drafts are accepted from interested parties until May 9, 2014.
