The German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) has just released a computer software version of the self-assessment program known as the 'Simple Scheme for Hazardous Substances' (EMKG). It is designed to assist employers in assessing hazard levels in relation to chemicals which are inhaled, or absorbed through the skin in the course of work.
Users of the software are facilitated through all of the relevant steps of effective risk assessment procedure: from information gathering on the derivation of protective measures, through to testing and documentation. Thus, effective priorities for action can be implemented at each workplace, as each operation can determine its own hazard levels, together with the appropriate safety measures to introduce or develop.
Furthermore, users can simultaneously create a list of hazardous substances according to the Hazardous Substances Ordinance in tandem with the program. Notably, all data remains on EMKG-software on the user's computer, and internet access is only needed for upgrades, or when links are to be used.
Along with this new software program, the BAuA has developed another product which can systematically assess hazardous materials which come into contact with persons by way of on-site manual handling. Known as the "EMKG Compact", the product consists of a pocket wheel to assess inhalation hazards, and a pocket card that can assess contact hazards.
