Saudi Arabia has launched a product safety program called SALEEM, which aims to provide consumers with high-quality products that are free of flaws.
SALEEM determines that a sound product shall be free of flaws that cause: high consumption of power or water, environmental pollution, malfunction, or poor performance, among other things. The SALEEM program aims to set out mechanisms and procedures for ensuring the safety of local and imported products subject to Saudi Standards.
In order to facilitate SALEEM, a new online conformity assessment system for imported products called SABER has been developed. The SABER system will become the central online repository of all mandatory SALEEM data.
Suppliers, manufacturers and importers will be able to register and store data within SABER, including details such as technical data and test reports verifying the safety of products imported into Saudi Arabia, as well as shipping documentation such as Bills of Lading and Country of Origin certificates.
It aims to:
- reduce the sale of false products on the Saudi market
- enhance consumer protection
- ensure that the products comply with the appropriate standards
- accelerate the release of products onto the Saudi market
- allow certificates of conformity to be obtained online
- connect suppliers and importers with legal representatives of approved compliance bodies
The SABER system will open for voluntary registration from 1 February 2018, and it is envisaged that registration will become mandatory as of 1 July 2018 if the trial period is successful.
