China has announced 4 new national toy safety standards to bring requirements closer to that of the EU and other international standards.
The standards include stricter requirements for DEHP, as well as limits for noise and flammability. They will come into force from January 1, 2016 and cover all products aimed at children under 14 years of age.
Chinese toy manufacturers, who currently produce more than 70% of the world’s toys, will find it easier to export to developing countries, as these countries generally utilize the International Standards Organization standards.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Standardization Administration, who announced the changes, have said that they will encourage manufacturers to adopt the new standard as soon as possible, and will publish the names of companies that adopt the new standards to inform consumers before the mandatory standards are adopted.
China exported €24.7 billion in toys in 2013, but toy producers who already export to the European and US markets will not be hugely affected by these changes, as they are already producing toys to export standards.
