StEP Launches White Paper: One Global Understanding of Re-use – Common Definitions
Worldwide, people struggle to agree on the understanding and application of the term ‘ewaste’ both in legislation and everyday use. StEP (Solving the E-Waste Problem) has published a white paper with the objective of providing a non-legal definition of the term and clarity about how the term should be used.
The paper, One Global Understanding of Re-use – Common Definitions, clarifies what EEE (electrical and electronic equipment) actually is, and gives a definition of ewaste, as endorsed by all of its members.
It also looks at perceptions of ewaste by its owner. This is where the decision of the owner defines if something is actually ewaste or if it can be directly reused by someone else for the same purpose that the product was originally designed.
StEP is a partnership of several UN organizations, prominent industry, government and international organizations, NGOs and the science sector, and initiates and facilitates sustainable e-waste handling through analysis, planning and pilot projects.
Compliance & Risks partners with StEP on its World E-Waste Map initiative, which graphically portrays the escalating global e-waste problem. It shows data from 184 countries, illustrating the estimated amount of electrical and electronic equipment put on the market and how much e-waste is eventually produced.
