China recently published 53 national standards on food contact materials and articles. The list includes:
- 2 standards on general safety requirements
- 10 products standards (including enamel, ceramic, glass, plastic resins, plastics, paper and paper board, metal materials, coatings, rubber materials and disinfection tableware)
- 41 testing standards for food contact materials and articles
The new standards have the following features:
- The scope of food contact materials are extended and more products are covered
- Clear administrative system for materials and articles. Four types of major materials (additives and plastic, coating, rubber, and silicon) are controlled in the form of catalogues
- More detailed information required for product labeling; new requirement of declaration of conformity
- Comprehensive product safety technical standards
- Stricter testing methods and conditions
- More specific enterprise responsibilities
The two standards on general safety requirements, GB 4806.1-2016 and GB 9685-2016, will enter into force on October 19, 2017. The rest will come into force on April 19, 2017.
