A routine technical rule to label two chemicals of high concern has been proposed by Maine's Department of Environmental Protection. Reporting for certain product categories will now be required for products that contain one or more of these two regulated chemicals. This technical rule will apply to manufacturers of specified product categories containing intentionally added amounts of either of the following:
- Decabromodiphenyl ehter (deca BDE)
- Hexabromocylododecane (HBCD)
These two chemicals are used in the non-polymeric, additive form as a flame retardant. The aim of the proposed rule is to gather information which would determine the prevalence of such uses. Some of the specified categories include children's products, textiles, furnishings and electronic devices with displays.
A public hearing is scheduled for November 1, 2016 and the deadline for public comment is November 14.
